The Complex Weight Loss Equation

For years, we have heard and accepted the idea that the weight loss equation was a simple one:

"If calories burned is greater than calories consumed, you will lose weight."

If that were true...

  • Medically-supervised weight loss wouldn't be a $99 billion-per-year business
  • Rates of obese adults would shrink. In 1991, 4 states had obesity rates as high as 19%. In 2009, only 1 state and the District of Columbia had obesity rates as low as 19%, and 9 states had rates greater than 30%. (http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html#State)
  • Rates of obesity-related disease would decrease. Frequency of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoarthritis, and cancer are all on the rise.
So what's the problem?

There is no doubt that what you eat and how much you exercise are the most important factors in weight loss, but many Americans are frustrated by the fact that despite their best efforts, they bodies are still resistant. There are a number of factors that can contribute to this--slowed metabolism, chronic inflammation, poor digestion--but today I heard a term that I had never heard:

OBESOGEN
